 Coach J.D. Mayo 

 

NISD is proud to welcome Head Boys Basketball Coach J.D. Mayo, one of the longest-tenured high school coaches in the state as he begins his 5th year at Nocona. Legendary Dallas Skyline Basketball Coach J.D. Mayo was named the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Coach of the Year in 2000 and earned a U.S. Merit Inc. Eagle in 2003, a leadership accolade once awarded to former president George W. Bush. He was also the recipient of Coaches who make a Difference on two different occasions. He coached the Texas High School Coaches All Star game in 2000. He was also chosen to coach the Oil Bowl All Star game. He coached the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches All Star game in 1998. He has also been named Father of the Year, and served as a Master Teacher. He was named the VAN ISD Distinguished Alumni recipient.  In September of 2011, the ribbon cutting ceremony was held for the Coach J.D. Mayo gymnasium at Skyline High School in Dallas, Texas.
 
Coach Mayo has coached numerous players who played beyond high school.
This is his 43rd year in the Coaching profession. He was Head Boys Basketball Coach at Dallas Skyline for 33 years and had 698 wins which is the most of any basketball coach in DISD history.  His teams made the Playoffs for 13 consecutive years!
 
Coach Mayo has served as the President of Dallas ISD Basketball Coaches Association, President of the North Texas Basketball Coaches Association, President of the Dallas Coaches Association and President of the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.  Coach Mayo serves as a motivational speaker and co directed and founded the Dallas ISD Athletic leadership conference.
 
 
Coach Mayo stated that it is an honor and privilege for his family to be in Nocona. He also expressed appreciation of the kindness and warmth of the community. 
 
Coach Mayo believes that his main purpose in Coaching is to “Change lives and be a difference maker and give God the glory.” His philosophy: God, family, academics and hoops.
